Russell Creek Family YMCA

Plano, Texas

Plano’s Russell Creek Family YMCA is a 29,000 SF private fitness facility on a 4.6-acre site. This building serves a young, energetic community in an area with other private health club options. The building’s design serves as a display for the YMCA fitness programs and equipment. Open, large expanses of north-facing glass combined with brightly colored glazed block suggest a vibrant and energetic athletic facility.

The colored block corresponds to the YMCA’s six primary “Pillars of Character” traits (represented by the six official YMCA colors) which the organization actively promotes. The building’s simple structure and orderly plan respond to a tight budget. A large box with two-story spaces is carefully arranged to allow for future expansion. Smaller one-story areas defining entries and exits are tucked under the perimeter of “the big box.” This project won a Dallas Chapter AIA Design Award in 2006.
